46 days--slow and steady

I've had little time to blog about my days with AppleJack, nor do I have many pictures of this journey.  Sorry about that!
I am learning a lot from this mustang and I think he is going to make someone an incredible horse!
Today was our first ride with a group of other riders and he did really well.  We are still only on about the 5th ride and only walk to trot transitions and stop...  He did great with the trail course obstacles (bridge, tarp, rails,..)
And thats about where we are at....long ways to go but we are steadily improving.

7days already!! time flies!

Well AppleJack is something else--We are still working on trust--every morning I go in his pen and have to remind him that I am not going to eat him and we start all over.  But each day is better at least! I am realizing he is going to probably take a month of lots of ground work before I ride him. 
I can pick up all 4 feet (briefly). I can lead him out into the barn and the round pen.  He has issues with going through his stall out into the main barn so I have worked with getting with that the same I would work on trailer loading.  I can curry him all over gently and I am starting to get a little more careless around him and he is handling that a little better every day. He gives to pressure in his face very well and backs up nicely as well as flex's his head real soft. 
He is not even close to being ready to tie---I need to be careful not to put any "scare" into this horse as it would likely stick with him for life. 
It's all about the horse and setting him up for a successful future. He is going to be one heck of a performance horse though and we think he's going to have a lot of cow in him!!

Today I am going to take him out and into the round pen and just see what he'll let me do.  I'll put some logs and maybe a barrel and just see if I can get him interested in some games--jumping? putting his nose on stuff? walk trot canter transitions....side passing. Maybe he'll let me jump up and down next to him by the end of todays session?  We will see =)

Day 2 Sunday March 13 2011

Things are going slow but I am loving every minute of it!  It's hard to not push harder and for more since this is a 90 day competition but I know It will pay off to take my time at the begining with this mustang.  He has so much character and I know he's got a huge amount of try and he really wants to team up with me. He is also trying to see if nipping at me will get me to go away--LOL! though its not vicious at all-- I love his demeanor
It's day 2 and I am only scratching his neck and whithers with my hands and yeilding his hind and front quarters and directing his movement somewhat. I would like to get his number off today and be able to touch him all over.
AppleJack is a lot of horse and he is very sensitive but unlike my last mustang he really wants to try and join up with me!!  It's very exciting =)

I don't have a video camera, camera, horse trailer or truck this year so I am more dependent on friends and family to help me out.  I am also working full time this year so I hope to be able to keep up here on my blog but I am not making any promises.

updated 9pm= I was able to touch him most everywhere tonight with just 20minutes of work and I got his number off his neck=)   Then he came over to where I was crouching--sniffed me real good and just sat there with his head low just chillaxin next to me for about 10 minutes--(in a corner that he's never comfortable in!!)  it was really awesome!

Pick Up Today!! Meredith S. and I picked up our mustangs in Canon City this morning!

Amy L., Christy H., Meredith S., and I took the 3 hour drive and back to get our mustangs, arriving in Canon City at 8:00am we were the second truck/trailer to arrive!
We got a couple real nice horses--very wild but hopeful for sure!!  They loaded my sorrel 4year old mustang first and the first words out of my mouth were AppleJack!!  So AppleJack will be his name--after my very first horse (they look so much alike its scary) who died last year during my first EMM at the ripe ol age 30!.

2011 Extreme Mustang Makeover CO

Wow here we go again!  I am really excited to pick up my new mustang on Friday March 11th, 2011!!!  All I know is that its a gelding between the ages of 3 and 6/??   I work full time in a lab and this year (unlike last year) I am going to be working 40 to 50 hours a week and squeezing in time for my mustang project!  But I am also much more prepared this year, having last years experience plus I have been riding a lot more this year and riding with Bridle-Bit Training and tack!!
